This talk has been presented at various venues since 1996 and was last presented at the "Once and Future Web" conference in Menlo Park, California, which commemorated the 10th anniversary of the first Web server in the United States.
A history of hypertext and hypermedia technology from ancient to modern times is covered, including pioneers such as Vannevar Bush, Doug Engelbart, Ted Nelson, and Tim Berners-Lee. An analysis of the technology, its evolution, and its connection to the development of the personal computer are presented, including copious screen shots of early hypertext systems and pre- and early-Web browsers.
